Coping with difficulties

Everyone has troubles, issues, problems. It’s one of the things that makes us human. You are not alone in your feelings. Some of our troubles are very serious, life threatening, life changing, others are temporary annoyances or things that we bring upon ourselves. What you describe as a trouble, another may describe as an opportunity, challenge, even a blessing in disguise. All in all here are a few key tips to keep in mind:

You have options: You always have a choice for how you make of and handle your issues. When you are afraid or stressed, you may feel trapped and limit the possibilities and choices you have. To calm and clear your mind, take a few slow, deep breaths filling your belly, then upwards. Let the air out slowly and completely by pushing your belly inwards. You can also change your environment (leave the room) to a place where you can clear your head and think more reasonably before you choose to act.

You have support: Everyone, yes everyone, has someone who cares about them, who will listen to you and respect your feelings. Just open your eyes and look more closely at those around you or nearby. Your support may be professionals in counseling, coaching, teaching, etc.

You have a voice: Write your feelings and thoughts to get the troubles out of your head to work them out. TakeMyTroubles is a great way, as well as a journal. Share your feelings with someone you trust or who’s job it is to listen, keep your information confidential, and help – such as a counselor, minister, etc.

You have energy: Doing something physical – sports, run, walk, stretch, deep breathing. Do something even if you are tired. Physical activity can help relieve stress and clear and open your mind.

You have humor: Using humor to laugh about a situation or yourself can lighten the stess and put the situation into perspective.
